Holy Week 2022

Palm Sunday (also known as Passion Sunday) is a day of change from the joyful celebration of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the solemn knowledge of what lies ahead for him in the coming week. The custom of waving olive twigs in the procession began in the fourth century. It was not until about 400 years later that palm branches were first used, and they continue to be used today. (Worship Service on Sunday, April 10 at 10 a.m.)

Stations of the Cross is an event that provides an interactive experience as you contemplate Jesus’ journey to the Cross. This year’s Stations of the Cross is a traditional one that focuses on the experience of Jesus. You can come to participate in this event any time between 10 a.m. and noon or between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. No reservations are needed. Some activities for children are also provided. (Monday, April 11 through Friday, April 15.)

Maundy Thursday focuses on the Lord’s Supper and the new commandment to love one another. Our service will include either a skit or a dramatic reading of the Passion story. It is a Tenebrae service in which we extinguish one candle at a time throughout the night. The service ends with only one candle in the darkness while a soloist sings, “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord.” (Worship Service on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m.)

Good Friday is the day we remember Christ’s suffering and death on the cross. This would be a good time for you to read through the Passion story in one of the Gospels: Matthew 26:30–27:66, Mark 14:26–15:47, Luke 22:39–23:56, or John 18:1–19:42. It would also be a good day to come to our traditional “Stations of the Cross” experience. (Friday, April 15)

Easter celebrates Christ’s resurrection and the joyous gift of new life offered to all of God’s people. Easter and the seven weeks following is the oldest, celebrated liturgical season of the church year. The season of Easter ends with the Day of Pentecost, fifty days after Easter.(Easter Sunday Worship Service, April 17 at 10:00 a.m.)
