“Don’t just GO to church, BE the church!”
Southminster’s Vision Statement says that we seek “to be the head, heart and hands of Jesus Christ, driven by God’s love for our church and the world beyond.”
Every Sunday, as we worship together in the Sanctuary, we pay attention to the part of that statement that engages our head and heart. Our Mission Team is challenging us to take a Sunday when we focus on being the “hands” (and I would add, “the feet”) of Christ, reaching out in love to the world beyond our doors.
On October 14, instead of our regular worship service,
OUR SERVICE WILL BE OUR WORSHIP
as we answer Christ’s call to love the neighbor that we don’t even know.
We will be sending some of you out into the community to help others. Those who prefer to stay at the church will be here working on projects that benefit those beyond our building.
“The Church Has Left the Building” includes ALL AGES, so children and youth will have their own projects, too.. Nursery care will be available.
As soon as we have all the projects worked out, we will have sign-ups in the narthex and in the office. While we still have some projects to organize, this is what we have planned thus far:
OUT OF THE BUILDING PROJECTS:
House of Bread: 10 to 12 volunteers will make and serve a hot meal to those who are hungry.
Partners in Community Living: 9 or 10 volunteers will either paint, do yard work, or engage with the residents in one of the Dayton area’s homes for developmentally challenged adults.
Free Cook Out for neighbors in a low-income neighborhood
IN THE BUILDING PROJECTS:
“Little Dresses for Africa”: Sewing pillow case dresses to send to little girls in African Villages. Some of us will be running sewing machines while others can be pressing, cutting or pinning fabric.
St. Vincent de Paul, Gateway Homeless Shelter: Making casseroles at Southminster that can be taken to the shelter and frozen for future use. (No pre-cooking necessary.) Volunteers will chop and mix ingredients and put them in containers.
Mailing for a Non-Profit: We will either be preparing a mailing for a non-profit like Hannah’s Treasures or another organization.
