Welcome to Southminster. We are glad you’re here!
We are a mission oriented community. We are at our best when we are working to make life better for those who are struggling. Believing that God calls us to serve others, we find ways to address the needs we see in the world around us.
We are a learning community, offering a variety of opportunities for Christian education and conversation for all ages.
We are a fellowshipping community. We love to laugh, play, and of course eat together; and we are good at all three! The warmth, friendliness, and caring of this congregation are what make us feel like we are truly part of a family of faith.
We are a worshiping community. We value our time together as we worship God. The beautiful harmonies of the choir, the prayers of the people, the sharing of the Scriptures, and relevant preaching inspire us weekly.
We are a welcoming and inclusive community. Whatever your background or circumstance, you are welcome here. We are richer for our diversity, and your presence among us is a blessing.
As part of the Presbyterian Church USA, we “affirm that God comes to us with grace and love in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose for us so that we might have eternal and abundant life in him. As Christ’s disciples, called to ministry in his name, we seek to continue his mission of teaching the truth, feeding the hungry, healing the broken, and welcoming strangers.”
We are an inclusive church; supporting all peoples in their faith journeys regardless of gender, age, orientation or ethnicity.
Sunday mornings begin with adult education classes, followed by interactive worship at 10:00 AM which includes through song (old and new), prayer, scripture and an engaging message. Elementary and preschool children leave the partway through the service for Sunday School that goes until 11:30am.
We also encourage everyone to participate in activities throughout the week: Team meetings, various classes and support groups. In addition, we continue to focus on local, regional and global mission through volunteerism and/or financial support. Our church community is often inspired by those who are learning how to grow their own faith.
WHY YOU MIGHT LIKE SOUTHMINSTER
You seek a casual, welcoming, inclusive and growing church community. Diversity is valued and encouraged at Southminster.
You love to be the heart and hands of Jesus Christ in mission—here and around the world. We are at our best when we are working to make life better for people who are struggling. Youth and adults love to serve Christ though mission and service such as Habitat for Humanity, The Foodbank, tornado relief, new mission projects, and mission beyond our community. One Sunday a year, Southminster folks participate in The Church Has Left the Building in lieu of worship.
You are looking for a church community that’s big enough to offer a variety of great ministries and programs—and small enough to get to know others and feel at ease. Southminster folks love to laugh, play and, of course, eat together! Offered are many church-wide activities as well as more than 30 small groups for study, fellowship, like interests, and support.
You are seeking quality children’s and youth ministries that your kids will enjoy and where they will grow in faith. Kids—infants to grade 12—are offered quality care and learning, fun and friendship. In addition, children love Vacation Bible School; younger youth grow in faith through mission work and puppet ministry; older youth travel to mission camps and youth retreats.
You appreciate an affirming message in worship that both engages the Scripture and meets you where you are. Pastors Nancy Birdsong and Laura Nile deliver messages that linger in the Head all week and that challenge and inspire the Heart and Hands to support and serve others. The prayers of the people and the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ uplift us!
You love inspiring music—both traditional and innovative—and the organ, puppets and bells. The worship experience is relaxed and uplifting—celebrating what God is doing in this place, with a dynamic organ, award-winning puppets, beautiful bells, and more. Hymns are both familiar and fresh.
You want to be listened to and cared for. In addition to pastoral care, counseling and hospital visits offered by the pastors, Southminster’s well-trained Stephen Ministers and the deacons provide care and support through dozens of ministries.
Your heart yearns for a sense of peace and purpose every day. We are all on a faith journey, and we welcome you to find peace and purpose with us.
Southminster is a community that is excited about God and what we believe God wants us to be and do.
