Interdenominational Adult Education

The 2009-10 lecture series is inspired by Stephen Prothero’s important book Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know — And Doesn't.


The Creeds and Why they Still Matter - Dr. David Whitford

David will address the second part of the theme on September 20 from 3:30 till 5 with a lecture Why the Creeds Still Matter. Dr. Whitford is on the faculty of United Theological Seminary.


History, Politics and Religion - Wendy Deichmann Edwards

Dr. Deichmann Edwards will kick off a year-long discussion of Religious Literacy with a lecture on how religion intersects with history and politics in our current culture. Dr. Deichmann Edwards is the president of United Theological seminary and teaches on the History of Christianity, American Religious History, and Historical Theology. This lecture will take place from 3:30 till 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 25 in the Community Room of Southminster Presbyterian Church.


Media and Religion — Rev. Dr. Ed McNulty

Nationally known expert on film and religion Dr. Ed McNulty will show film clips and talk about how film and other visual media use religion. He will bring examples of films that draw on a knowledge of religions. In order to truly fully understand the themes of some films we must know the Bible / Koran / Torah. This program will take place from 3:30 till 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2010, in the Community Room at Southminster Presbyterian Church.


Religion and Art

Dr. Marilyn Doyle will lecture on Religious Literacy and Art from 3:30 till 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2010 in the Community Room at Southminster Presbyterian Church.


Other Community Events

Care Ministry Training

This is an annual event for the training of lay caregivers in ministries of care and compassion. Details will be announced as they become available. Classes are typically held on a weekday evening in the Fall.


Lectures will be held in the Community Room at Southminster Presbyterian Church and are free and open to all.
